On Monday, November 10th, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation held it’s 18th annual Magical Evening Gala at the Marriott Marquis in Manhattan. Tons of celebrities including, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Molly Simms, Kathleen Turner and Jessica Szohr attended. The foundation began when Christopher Reeve fell off of a horse during a tragic riding accident leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. The Reeve foundation focuses on the research and development needed to treat victims of spinal cord injuries hoping to one day find a cure. Being a success, the foundation has improved the quality of many lives by providing grants for people living with paralysis.
I was overcome with excitement when I realized that I was covering this particular event. Not only was it my first big celebrity event but I am also a fervent supporter of the cause, since I have been diagnosed with severe Scoliosis since the age of ten. Being my first event I was very nervous and did not know how to go about interviewing these influential peoples and celebrities, however, once I began to further converse with them I realized that they were all very cordial and down to earth. It was inspiring to see all different age groups, social classes and genders coming together to commemorate the honorees, artist Chuck Close, foundation supporter James L. Nederlander and the New York Rangers. Overall the event was a success and I think that it was important to get together and remember the great “mental and physical fortitude” that both Christopher and Dana Reeve had, as described by Glenn Close.
